JAMAICAN FUSION POT PIES

Plunging a fork into a steaming hot pot pie evokes such warm and fuzzy memories for me.

Although I grew up in a Trinidadian household, I loved it when my mom would be too tired to cook a big meal, and would opt to pop a couple of chicken pot pies in the oven.

Don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed West Indian food, but having chicken pot pies  for dinner was such a treat. It was completely different from the food I ate on the regular (read: roti, pelau, curry chicken), so I cherished every bite whenever we had it.

I loved the thick, savoury, gravy and the small bite-sized pieces of chicken. But honestly, it was all about the flaky crust for me.

I would actually eat the filling and leave the crust until the end. Yes, I’m just a little crazy like that! Lol.

When I read on Instagram about Pie Mon – a Jamaican take on pot pies, I had to try it. I had to see if you could mix Jamaican flavours with a Canadian classic, so I ordered the oxtail pot pie and the jerk chicken pot pie.

Ordering the pies

When you order the pies, they are delivered frozen, with instructions in the box.

The Oxtail pot pie (5 “ personal pie)

Oh yeah, this is the pot pie of my dreams! I love the meatiness and the serious level of seasoning of the oxtail. It is tender and boneless – which means you don’t have to struggle with bones. To be honest, I could eat this meat with rice and peas – it doesn’t need to be contained in a pie crust.

Speaking about the crust.  It is flaky, buttery perfection. I could eat it all day!

Instead of using potatoes and peas like traditional pot pies, the gravy includes butter beans – which surprisingly gives it a smooth texture.

I liked this pot pie, but for some reason it actually tasted better the second time I ate it.

I made it, cut it in half, and put the second half in the freezer and then ate it 2 weeks later. The jerk flavour was a lot stronger (and spicier!) the second time I ate it. I liked that I could taste the grilled flavour in each forkful.

The Verdict: Would I buy it again?

The jerk chicken pot pie was yum, but it’s the oxtail all day everyday for me!
