Product Review:
As much as I like to cook, I get a little intimidated by baking. Although I do make one helluva cornbread (it’s what I’ve been told!), I get really panicky about making other baked goods – scones, biscuits, pie crusts – basically anything flaky.
I’ve wanted to make scones forever. I love scones. They’re buttery, they can be savory or sweet – to me, they are just the perfect pastry.
On Thanksgiving, my sister brought me some scones that she bought at a local bakery. They were insane!! Light as air and yummy. I had a cheddar dill scone that had me going back for seconds!
Literally 3 weeks later I read online that the bakery had gone out of business and all locations were closed. Noooooo!
Yes, I was heartbroken (cue dramatic music!). I wondered if I would I be able to find a scone that could live up to the scone my sister gave me.

On my weekly trip to the grocery store, I saw that the President’s Choice (PC) scone mix was on sale. I picked up a box and thought, for $3.49, it’s worth a shot. It might not be as good as the one my sis gave me, but why not give it a try! Plus it can help build my confidence in making pastries.
What you need:
- The scone mix
- Milk
- Melted butter
- One egg
You’ll also need:
A mixing bowl and some measuring cups.
I gingerly mixed all ingredients together because the one thing I learned from the Food Network is that you shouldn’t over work your dough. I enjoy savory scones so I sprinkled in some cheddar cheese to the dough. After I got equal distribution of the cheese, I rolled out the dough, cut it, and placed in my toaster oven. (I use my toaster oven to make EVERYTHING! I like the cook on everything from wings to my signature cornbread)
After 20 minutes, I took them out and they looked like a scone I’d get from a boujie bakery. I just needed to see if they tasted as good as they looked.

The Verdict
Okay, nothing can beat pastries from an artisanal bakery, but the scones were pretty decent. They weren’t heavy, or cakey; they had the right consistency. They were a bit sweet, but it worked well with the cheddar cheese.
Would I buy it again?
Um, yes! I really liked them. I like that you can customize it. You can add chives, bacon, or make it sweet with blueberries or chocolate chips. I will buy it again.
Have you tried the mix before? Leave me a comment and let me know how it came out!
